How we choose resorts
Every resort on this list was visited by someone on our team, in season, with rental skis and a lift pass bought at the window. We write down the honest parts too: the queue at the gondola, the walk from the hotel door to the piste, and how the snow holds up through a warm February.
Our Ukrainian Carpathian picks lean toward Bukovel, Dragobrat and Slavske, where transfers stay short and snowmaking covers the lower runs. In the Alps we stay between 1,200 m and 1,600 m, so a thin snow year still leaves skiable terrain above the tree line and a valley lift to fall back on.
Snow record checked. We review at least five past seasons of snow depth before we sign a partner.
We sleep there. At least one night in a partner hotel, plus a walk of the transfer route.
Prices leave nothing out. Lift passes, taxes and mandatory fees are always stated up front.
Resort guide
These are the places our team returns to season after season. Below are plain notes on terrain, altitude and which weeks actually deliver snow, so you can pick with your eyes open.
The biggest linked area in the Ukrainian Carpathians, with fast lifts, wide groomed runs and a village that works for groups and families alike. Best from mid-December to late March.
Honest note: weekends in January are busy and lift queues grow after 10:00. Midweek arrivals ski noticeably more.
The highest base in Ukraine and the most reliable natural snow, which is why freeriders keep coming back. Lifts are older and the access road is rough in heavy weather.
Honest note: this is not a resort for absolute beginners, and a 4x4 transfer is often part of the trip.
Close to Lviv, gentle and affordable, with good ski schools and short transfer times from the city. A sensible first mountain holiday for children.
Honest note: the lower slopes suffer in mild winters, so we advise booking late January onwards.
St. Anton, Val Gardena and Les Deux Alpes cover everything from long cruising runs to serious vertical. Transport, accommodation and lift passes are bundled into one price.
Honest note: alpine holidays cost three to four times more than the Carpathians, and high-season dates sell out by autumn.

Season notes
Dates matter less than altitude and aspect. This is how the winter usually runs in the Ukrainian Carpathians and across the European Alps, based on seasons our team has skied.
Bukovel and Dragobrat begin building base, though cover is thin below 1,200 m. In the Alps, resorts above 1,800 m are the safer bet before the New Year.
The most dependable cover of the year and the fullest slopes. School holidays and weekend traffic push prices and lift queues up, so book early or shift your arrival to a Tuesday.
Longer days, softer corn snow and quieter resorts. North-facing runs hold up well, while lower valley trails soften by early afternoon.
